Basic Eligibility
- Must have a:
- High school diploma, or
- GED, or
- Honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces after at least 24 months of active duty
- Must be at least 21 years of age
Background & Legal Requirements
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Must pass a fingerprint-based background check
- Must not:
- Have any felony convictions
- Have a Class B misdemeanor within the last 10 years
- Have any conviction involving family violence
- Be currently charged with a disqualifying offense
- Must not be prohibited from:
- Operating a motor vehicle
- Possessing firearms or ammunition
- Must meet all legal requirements to carry and use a handgun in the State of Texas
Medical & Psychological Standards
- Must pass a medical examination confirming:
- Physical fitness for duty
- No drug dependency or illegal drug use
- Must pass a psychological evaluation confirming emotional and mental fitness for law enforcement duties
Licensing & Training
- Must:
- Complete required TCOLE training standards
- Pass the state licensing exam
- Complete a background investigation
Department Hiring Process
In addition to the above, applicants must complete:
- Written Test
- Minimum passing score: 70%
- Physical Fitness Test
- 1.5-mile run: under 19:50
- Push-ups: 20
- Sit-ups: 20
- Bench press: ½ body weight (or 130 lbs, whichever is less)
- Oral Interview Board
